Xinyu
Liu is an interdisciplinary artist and curator whose work moves across
technologies, memories, and mediated environments. Working with sound, video,
installation, and digital media, she explores how systems of information shape
perception, identity, and collective memory. Her projects often inhabit the
soft zones between the personal and the networked: where attention flickers,
meaning disperses, and histories surface in fragments. By treating platforms as
architectures of experience and archives as sites of tension, Xinyu’s practice
traces how we come to know, remember, and relate across timelines, interfaces,
and species.

To Be Continued is a minimalist interactive installation composed of four square light switches, each bearing a close-up image of a hand gesture. Activated through an ordinary domestic interface, these gestures operate as units of communication: pointing, pausing, selecting, and releasing. As viewers toggle the switches, sequences of illumination emerge, through which meaning arises via accumulation, repetition, and interruption, framing everyday action as an open-ended process in which life itself remains to be continued.

“A place is a pause in movement… It is the pause that makes it possible for a location
to become a centre of felt value.” — Yi-Fu Tuan

Some Kind of Home: A Pause in Motion is a group exhibition I curated as the lead curator, exploring the evolving relationship between domestic interiors and personal memory. Framing the notion of home as both a physical site and a psychological landscape, the exhibition investigates how spatial environments shape self-perception, interpersonal dynamics, and intergenerational bonds.

Unfolding across the living room, stairwell, and kitchen, the works of eighteen
artists chart shifting meanings of “home,” revealing subtle undercurrents that
pulse beneath still surfaces. In these familiar yet fraught spaces, domesticity
becomes an archive of presence, a battleground for identity, and a quiet stage
where transformation begins.

Wings of Passage is an accordion-style booklet dedicated to ornithological research, aiming to raise awareness about bird populations and conservation efforts.
Birds play a crucial role in Earth's ecosystems by facilitating pollination, dispersing seeds, controlling insect populations, and contributing to nutrient cycles. However, they currently face unprecedented challenges: human activities impact 70-80% of bird species, with over 40% experiencing population declines. Through detailed case studies, this booklet delves into these pressing issues, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges birds face and the broader environmental implications. Protecting bird species can begin with simple, actionable steps.

I am here to bring you an important message. Please listen carefully.

The Message You Don't Want to Miss examines marketing ethics and media literacy through the lenses of advertising and journalism, with a primary focus on attention theft. Attention is a scarce commodity in the digital age. As we are inundated with vast amounts of information online every day, digital platforms and media have entered a race to capture our limited attention through various means. Marketers increasingly lean towards creative covert marketing activities, which can sometimes devolve into unethical practices. Native advertising, advertorials, and sponsored content are embedded everywhere on the internet, causing frequent distractions or making many viewers unaware they are looking at an advertisement to begin with. The work starts with a serious news report and gradually evolves into a frenzy of advertising. This work includes a projection-based installation and a dual-channel video version. The full video is available upon request for professional purposes.

Attention Is All You Need examines disinformation and sensationalism through perception, in an era where media shapes reality as much as it reports it.

Driven by the choreography of text, the piece unfolds like inscriptions struck onto a digital monument. Each word lands with measured force. It exposes language as system and surface. Typed, timed, and emptied. Meaning flickers, then fractures. What remains is an arrangement instead of a message: of signals, distortions, and the illusion of clarity. This work exists in three formats: a mixed-media installation with a focus on graphic design, a floor projection version, and a vertical cinema version. The full video and technical specifications are available upon request for professional purposes.

Interwoven Relationships was a group exhibition I co-curated during my residency at Millbank Tower Podium. Using office furniture and everyday objects as a framework, the exhibition aimed to reconfigure our relationships with nature, society, family, and ourselves.

The works presented observations and reflections on landscapes we often take for granted or overlook, guiding us through a journey from the material world to the spiritual realm, from ancient records to modern technology, and from intimate connections to social structures. In the fast-paced, fragmented nature of urban life, the exhibition invited visitors to slow down and observe moments of dissonance, uncertainty, and small surprises in their everyday lives, encouraging alternative perspectives on personal, collective, and societal experiences.
